Federal Forest Fund Reduction

March 12, 2015 By webmaster

In late January we were notified that our Federal Forest Fund allotment for this year was reduced by over 90%.  This reduction in funding will have an adverse effect in the operation of our school.  I have been assured that our US Legislators are working on a solution to this reduction to our Federal Forest Funds.  I encourage each of you to contact our legislators and let know the importance of reinstating these funds.  Listed below are the names and contact information for our US and State Legislators.

Thank you for your continual support,

Letter from Superintendent

February 26, 2015 By webmaster

Meeting:          March 2, 2015
Location:         Multipurpose Room at the Secondary School
Time:               6:00 P.M.

To all patrons and friends of JSD 243,

I would like to thank each of you that were able to attend the meeting Monday February 23, 2015.  I hope that all who attended found it to be informative.  The individuals who attended the meeting asked for an opportunity to brain storm ideas for consideration to help offset the reduction in funding due to a decrease in student enrollment and the reduction in our Federal Forest Funding.

On Monday March 2, 2015 we will meet as a community to work through the same process our staff used to identifies possible ideas for consideration by the Board of Trustees.  If you are interested in participating in this process we will be meeting in the multipurpose room located at the secondary school.

Despite what you may heard from social media the purpose of this meeting is to identify the best long term sustainable solutions to a difficult situation.  As always, if at any time you have a question concerning the school district please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Jim Doramus

p.s. information from the meeting:

Decrease in Funding (projected) Federal Forest State Support Total
14-15 (current year) -$107,101 to- $109,101** -$32,640 -$140,742
15-14 (upcoming year) -$108,101** -$102,000 -$210,101

**We have not typically used the total amount of Federal Forest dollars each year. For the 13-14 school year we spent $60,000 to supplement the food service program, maintenance projects (paint, floor covering, etc.), equipment repairs and upgrades, upgrade technology, supplies and curriculum.

Projected 15-16 school year budget decreases due to declining enrollment (State Funding) and the amount of Federal Forest dollars we have been relying on each year to subsidize other accounts.
$102,000         State Funding
$50,000           Federal Forest
$152,000         Total Projected Shortfall for the 2015 – 2016 school year

February 18, 2015

To the Patrons and Friends of the Salmon River Joint School District,

This is the time of year the district staff starts preparing for the upcoming school year.  As we plan for the district’s ninth year, we find ourselves at a crossroad.  There have been two recent events that will affect next year’s budget:  first, the decline in student enrollment and second, the reduction in our Federal Forest Fund.

I would like to invite you to the monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees on February 23rd at 6:00 P.M. in the IEN room located at the secondary school.  At the board meeting, I will explain in more detail the current financial situation of the district.  If you are unable to attend the meeting and have questions about what you may have read on Facebook or heard on the street, please feel free to contact me at the district office. Thank you for your patience and support during this time.

Sincerely,

Jim Doramus

6th Graders Earn Recognition

January 27, 2015 By webmaster

On January 24, Sarah Walters’ 6th grade science students competed in the National Engineers Future City Competition in Boise against middle school students from around the state.  Despite their competing against 28 teams from all divisions, the judges awarded the Salmon River team the WH Pacific “Most Accessible City: Design that accommodates most innovative systems (transportation/public highway) for a community” award.

Sixth grade class members earned their place to State in the local competition between middle school grades 6-8, judged by Superintendent Jim Doramus, Board Member and Business Owner Eric Hook, Ranch Owner Doug Boggan, and Idaho County Sherriff’s Deputy Jonny Wilson.

All team members grades 6-8 received a tee shirt and a certificate of participation from the event.

Salmon River Future City Competition

January 8, 2015 By webmaster

Salmon River Future City Competition
Salmon River junior high school will be hosting a local Future City competition on Tuesday January 13th in the IEN Room at 11:00 a.m.
Three teams (6th, 7th, and 8th) will be competing to compete at the regional competition in Boise.
Here is a little information about the program.
The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity™ software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January. Regional winners represent their region at the National Finals in Washington, DC in February.
To learn more about this project please visit this site:
http://futurecity.org/
We would love to have any community members or parents come watch the presentations.
