Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do we need a Levy?
The state of Idaho continues to under fund education, leaving schools without the needed funds to meet educational requirements. This Levy replaces last years, this is not an additional Levyand supplements our income to maintain our current operationsand covers the state’s shortfall
for basic operation, special education, advanced placement courses, extra-curricular activities such as BPA, athletics, and much more. This Levy will show on next years tax assessment bills.
How much will it cost me on my taxes?

Are we going to need a supplemental Levy every year?
YES, this is an ANNUALreplacement Levy and as long as the State of Idaho continues its current form of funding for public education we will need a supplemental Levy. Continued support from our community is vital, State and Federal funding is unstable and inadequate. Our school is vital to the community of Riggins. Our community needs families to survive and families need and want a good quality school.
What if the Levy doesn’t pass?
The school board and administration will be forced to make difficult cuts that will drastically affect the quality of education, our students, our staff, our facilities, and our community.
What do we want in our schools?
We desire to maintain a safe environment and a quality of education to advance opportunities for both college preparatory, vocational pursuits, and continue to enhance the curriculum and technology with professional development for our staff so they can have the necessary tools to give every student the opportunity to excel. The district took on the responsibility of providing Preschool services to our families, due to the closure of Head Start. Our district feels strongly that children who attend a high-quality early childhood education program, make cognitive and social gains that prepare them to start school. State monies cannot be used to fund a preschool program.
Many of our students that go on to college are well prepared and most with numerous dual credits on their transcripts and receive substantial scholarships. We want to continue extra-curricular activities, which plays a major role in a student’s ability to work as a team player as well as accept defeat and victory in good sportsmanship. We have great & talented students in our schools that deserve the best we can give them; our athletic accomplishments are just icing on the cake!
Preparing students for a global workplace with 21stcentury communication and critical thinking skills is crucial. Technology plays a huge role in this and is VERY underfunded. It is nearly impossible for districts to maintain current equipment and keep up with the ever-changing world of technology with the money provided by the state.
How does the Levy benefit me as a taxpayer?
Having a quality school in our area brings families to the area and promotes business and industry. These businesses yield the jobs needed to sustain our community. Property owners and renters are both stakeholders in our schools and have voting privileges.Keeping a thriving community keeps our properties value. Also keeps our stores, restaurants, gas stations, financial institutions, and other businesses open.

Athletic Schedule Posters
Attention Riggins Business owners:
We would like to inform you that the school has ended the partnership with All Around Sports and will be creating our own Athletic Schedule posters for the next school year (2019/2020). This way, 100% of the proceeds will go to Salmon River High School for extracurricular activities instead of a portion, which has been a wish of community members in the past.
Mr. Ratcliff’s Interactive Media-Graphics class has been working towards attaining industry level Adobe certification as part of a program called Create Idaho. By taking on the athletic poster project, students will gain applicable experience using Adobe programs, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as well as business skills as they work with businesses to create the ads that will be on the poster.
The students are currently working toward being ready to call soon so if you are interested or would like more information about this project, please leave a comment below or email Brandon Ratcliff at ratcliffb@jsd243.org.

Higher Education Day
IDLA Savage Academy Coordinator Highlighted
Copied from the IDLA Newsletter;
In 2010, the Savage Academy opened within the halls of Salmon River High School. At the time, the Academy was one of few digital classrooms throughout the state that was dedicated to offering students online courses during their day. Since that time, many schools have since incorporated IDLA within their regular schedule but Jan Barany was the individual selected to pioneer this to enhance students’ academic options. Jan was a perfect fit!
As a lifelong learner and valued member of the school community, she is a mentor to students in ways that personally connect her with students. Whether this is working trigonometry proofs on the board with groups of students or following students in their extracurricular activities, Jan has connected with students in a way that provides a holistic support for individuals.
This support, and the active role she plays in students’ academics, is reflected in Salmon River’s overall success in IDLA classes. Since their first enrollment, Jan has assisted students in this 1A school in almost 700 IDLA classes. Of note, her dedication, oversight and assistance provided to students has resulted in a 97% pass rate for all her students enrolled since 2010! As retirement is nearing this year for her, Jan’s dedication to all students will be missed but the efforts she has placed in students will be carried on through their future successes. As retirement is nearing this year for her, Jan’s dedication to all students will be missed but the efforts she has placed in students will be carried on through their future successes.

Savage Pride
“Savage Pride”
This year we are focusing on traits that we are calling “Savage Pride”
- Be Kind/Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
We are also focusing on increasing student attendance including absences and tardies.
At the Riggins Elementary monthly “Savage Pride” assembly the “Elf on the Shelf” presented candy canes and a “Savage Pride” pencil to all of the students who met the school’s attendance goal for the month. I would also, like to thank the PTO for providing lunch for each of the Student of the Month recipients.
Congratulations to Mrs. Medley’s 2nd grade! They have 96.557% attendance for the year!
Students have to be present and engaged in order to learn.
In 2017-18, the average student attendance rate was
elementary average 82.36%,
high school/middle school average 88.8%
district average 85.58%
We want children to succeed! So, our goal this year is to increase attendance to 90%.
We are almost half way through the school year and on our way to achieving that goal!
The elementary average is currently at 94.993%.
The high school/middle school is at 91.056%.
